Vision&Mission • Provide the space technologies experiences for all researchers and technician and developing their skills.• Conducting research on the space technologies and satellite communications and fabrications and publish the results.• Get the hand-on experience in the field of space technologies.• Support and develop the multi disciplinary field and researches which related to the space science and technologies.• Prepare the strategic studies which related to space science and technologies and also the studies whichrelated to the country development such as the agriculture fields, weather, remote sensing and theenvironments.• Move from using the space technologies as black boxes to be developed, designed and fabricated insideSudan.• Enable and help University of Khartoum to get enrolled in all local, national and international space technologies participation.• Co-operate with all possible local and international space research centers to spread the knowledge and get all the benefit.
Background The Space Research Centre was established at University of Khartoum in December 2014 to act as umbrella for all the entities that has well established research on space related activities at the university and also the new researches to be initiated.In 2010, A Cubesat (Cube Satellite) project was established at the University of Khartoum, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering as the first satellite project in all Sudanese universities. Since that, a lot of space and satellite researches were completed and achieved a huge success. Two prototypes were designed, fabricated and tested successfully following the international standards of Cubesat designation, and it became one of a few Cubesats with Camera mission on that time, but unfortunately it wasn't launched due to funding problems. Also, a fully functional ground station is installed and operated to track and command other Satellite and universities’ Cubesats. The University of Khartoum ground station is actively involved in receiving many CubeSats beacon and telemetry and was one of the first ground stations in the world to receive some of these satellite data. Furthermore, the team communicates with those universities and send their satellites’ data and comments about the satellite status. CubeSat is a type of miniaturized satellite for space research that is made up of multiples of 10×10×11.35 cm cubic units. CubeSats have a mass of no more than 1.33 kilograms per unit and often use commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components for their electronics and structure. CubeSats are most commonly put in orbit by deployers on the International Space Station, or launched as secondary payloads on a launch vehicle. In 1999, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) and Stanford University developed the CubeSat specifications to promote and develop the skills necessary for the design, manufacture, and testing of small satellites intended for low Earth orbit (LEO) that perform a number of scientific research functions and explore new space technologies. Based on the success of the Cubesat project, and the researches that were developed and designed on it, University of Khartoum decided to establish the Space Research Center in 4th of December 2014 under the decision no.398 and the Cubesat project is the first project adopted in this research center.The Space Research Center has a wide scope and is aiming to enroll all the projects from all other faculties and departments at University of Khartoum that are related to space sciences and technologies.
